What is Rust 2 Rome?

Rust 2 Rome is an adventure! It's a 2 week long 4000 mile trip from Scotland to Rome. The Rust part comes from the rule stating that your car should cost no more than £250.

Who can apply?

Anyone with a sense of adventure and a car that meets the requirements. A driving licence would be good too. There is no upper or lower age limit and you can take as many Copilots or Passengers as you can fit in your car.

What is the closing date?

The closing date for applications is Monday the 23rd of March. After this point we cannot guarantee you a place. If you would like to apply after the closing date please contact the organizer directly.

Who organizes it?

Rust 2 Rome is organized and run by Marko Fleming.

How do I join?

We have a limited amount of spaces available so go to the Sign up page and fill out all the details so we can consider you for a place. Once your application has been approved, we require payment via an online form which we well send to you by email.

What number can I be?

You will be issued a number based on the date of your application. Marko is number 01 as he did the first Rust 2 Rome trip in 2005. Members of Rust 2 Rome 2006 - 2008 have been allocated numbers 02 - 14. The first people to sign up for Rust to Rome 2009 will be allocated numbers from 14 onwards.

What do I need to go on the Rally?

Guts of steel and determination. Oh and some money and a car would help. You need to have a qualifying car. The maximum you can spend on your car is £250 this includes any work to get it through an MOT, but it excludes the actual cost of a MOT and Tax. So for example if you buy a car for £200 and you spend £60 on work to pass an MOT it wouldn't be eligible. If on the other hand you buy a car with MOT for £200 and you Tax it then you would still have £50 to spend on the car. So you could get yourself some furry dice, a nice radio or a seat cover!

Is there a fee to join?

The entrance fee varies depending on what you sign up as. Drivers pay £390 and Copilots £190.

What do I get for my money?

Everyone that signs up gets their first campsite booked and paid for, ferry crossing one way to France, 2 nights at the hotel in Rome booked and paid for, invitation to the Leaving and Victory party and route/checkpoint guides!

You also get your Drivers Pack which includes your CB Radio and Antenna, 4 t-shirts, car sticker pack, tire paints, driver pass, a hat, car flags, coasters, a victory cigar and a car preparation guide!

Copilots get the same just without the car related stuff like the CB Radio and sticker pack!

Why have the prices went up?

Back in the days when there was just two cars and three brave adventurers there was no costs involved! Just a few stickers and they were off! As the rally grew the overheads did too... All the organisation takes months of preparation, phone calls, research, driving around haggling prices and the organiser has sort all that out! Good news is though as it grows it's getting easier for you guys to get support from local sponsors and more likely that we'll be featured on TV soon! So stick with us!

I went last year, do I get a discount?

Your loyalty is much appreciated here at Rust 2 Rome, that's why as a Re-Applicant driver you'll get in for only £290 instead of the regular price!

You'll also get offered a lower number and you get an extra star on your Driver Pass!

What is the Drivers Pack and what do I get in it?

The Drivers Pack is what we give to every driver on Rust 2 Rome. It has everything you need to prepare your car as well as documentation. The contents include, CB Radio with aerial, car graphics kit, two t-shirts, a hat, car flags, a victory cigar as well as checkpoint guides, route maps and more! Copilots will receive goodies in the Driver of their team's Pack.

What is the difference between Driver and Copilot?

Drivers are those who go solo or are team leader of a group in one car. Copilots are those who are part of a team and support the Driver financially as well as sharing the driving. Usually Copilots are insured on the teams car.

I don't think I can afford to go, what can I do?

You can see if you can get people to sponsor you on the rally. Or you could find some friends to go with you and split the costs. Last year the fuel costs were approximately £400 and the tolls were about £200. But don't forget your accommodation, food, drink, souvenirs, girls...and the list goes on!!!

What are the requirements to enter?

You have to be old enough to drive with a valid driving licence and have a car which meets the budget requirements with insurance, mot and tax.

What happens after I sign up?

After you fill out the form on the signup page we will send you an online payment request. After we receive payment we will upload your details to the website, assign you the next driver number and send out your Drivers Pack for the rally.

Where does the rally start?

The in Edinburgh on Castle Street... We have special permission to be there on the day!

When is it?

We leave on 1nd of June 2009 and should reach Rome by about the 8th of June so you should be back home by the 15th of June.

What is the route?

The 2009 Route is a secret... but you can be assured that it will be amazing! It changes every year to keep it interesting!

Is Marko really the man?

He is half Italian, drives 70's muscle car, can play the guitar, takes amazing pictures, built a 400hp engine, makes the most amazing 3d graphics you've ever seen and has traveled across the world from Mexico to China. What do you think?

Where can I get insurance for my car?

Best thing to do is insure it for a month only using a temporary insurance cover. It's worked out cheaper than insuring the cars for the whole year, unless you plan to continue using your car when/if it makes it home! Check out these insurance companies below:
